Ready when Ofsted called: Devonshire Road Primary School’s website story
How a Bolton primary school combines thoughtful family communication, regular website care and Schudio’s Always Ready approach, and why that mattered during its recent inspection.
By the time Devonshire Road Primary School reached its inspection planning phone call, Ofsted had already been looking closely at the school’s website. Inspectors even referred to trips the children were due to go on.
For Deputy Headteacher Tom Abraham, it was a clear reminder that the website was doing an important job before anyone arrived at the school gates.
In terms of the impact of our website, it really does matter; we knew that they would delve into the website, and Ofsted had scoured our website in the days prior to our inspection, and even referenced the trips we were going on during our planning phone call!
But this wasn’t a website created for inspectors. It was a website maintained for parents, carers and children, with two members of staff reviewing it regularly throughout each week. That everyday attention, supported by Schudio’s software and advice, sits at the heart of the school’s story.
A website that reflects the school behind it
Devonshire Road’s welcome to families places a strong emphasis on developing the whole child. It describes a school that values every child, nurtures aspirations and enriches learning through visits and visitors. Partnership with parents and carers is central to that work.
The website needs to make those priorities visible. It has to explain the school’s approach, help families find practical information and give visitors a sense of what being part of Devonshire Road is like.
Tom’s view of its purpose is clear:
Ofsted really got a flavour for our school from what we posted, and we made sure that everything that was on there was for parents/carers and children - this is who the website is for essentially!
That distinction matters. Rather than treating family communication and inspection preparation as competing priorities, Devonshire Road’s experience shows how closely they can connect. Information that helps parents understand the school can also give inspectors a meaningful introduction to its day-to-day life.
The trips mentioned in the planning call are a specific example. Content about children’s experiences had been read and carried into the conversation about the school.
From a difficult-to-update website to ongoing care
The practical needs behind Schudio’s relationship with Devonshire Road go back to 2021. At the start of the project, the school wanted a website that was easier to update and navigate, along with a clearer way to organise policies and documents.
Those are important foundations for any approach based on regular maintenance. Staff need to be able to make changes, and families need to be able to find the information being maintained.
Since then, the work has continued beyond the original build. Conversations have covered the school’s visual identity, photography, navigation and how people get in touch. The aim has remained practical: make the website reflect Devonshire Road and work for the people using it.
One example came during the summer of 2026. While testing the contact page on his phone, Tom noticed that an email link opened an application he didn’t use. He recognised that parents could encounter the same problem.
Working with Schudio, he asked for a contact page that would take visitors to relevant online forms instead. Schudio prepared the forms and links, shared the updated page for review and made it live in August.
It was a small decision with a clear purpose: families shouldn’t have to work around their phone’s email settings simply to send the school a message. It also illustrates the attention behind the website. The school was considering how a page actually worked, not just how it looked.
Two sets of eyes, throughout the week
Devonshire Road’s approach to keeping information current is straightforward. Two members of staff manage the website, giving it regular attention throughout each week.
Tom describes the benefit in practical terms:
We have 2 members of staff who run the website in the back-end, and by having 2 sets of eyes on this regularly throughout each week, we are able to maintain up-to-date, current information (particularly safeguarding) which reduces any headaches when you get the call.
The routine matters as much as the software. Responsibility is shared, the website is revisited regularly and keeping information current forms part of normal school activity.
Safeguarding is a particular priority in Tom’s account. It isn’t something the school wants families to encounter only when an inspection prompts a review. It needs continuing attention because people may need that information at any point.
This is what Always Ready looks like in practice. It doesn’t mean nothing ever needs changing. It means there’s an established habit of checking, refreshing and improving, rather than allowing the work to accumulate until an inspection is imminent.
Knowing what needs attention
Alongside that routine, Tom found the Inspection Readiness element of the Schudio CMS useful in identifying where to focus.
The ‘Inspection Readiness’ element of the website CMS was really useful, too, as it helped us know what needed a refresh or an update.
The feature forms part of Website Insights. It brings together information about statutory content, policies and documents, the currency of key pages and regular review, giving staff a clearer view of what needs attention.
For Devonshire Road, the value was in making the next steps easier to identify. The dashboard supported the people responsible for the website; it didn’t replace their knowledge of the school or their judgement about its content.
That distinction is central to Schudio’s approach. The purpose isn’t to predict an inspection or sound an alarm. It’s to help schools look after their websites consistently, with useful information and practical support available as they work.
Sharing the approach with other schools
Devonshire Road’s work has also become part of a wider conversation about school communication.
Schudio has used the school’s website as an example in training, and Tom has led a session in our Community Classroom programme, sharing his approach to building family connections, brand management and parental engagement.
His contribution brings a school’s perspective to those discussions. The considerations are familiar to other school teams: presenting an authentic picture of school life, making information useful to parents and keeping the website manageable alongside other responsibilities.
It’s an ongoing exchange. Devonshire Road draws on Schudio’s advice and support, while the school’s own experience helps colleagues elsewhere consider how they could improve their websites.
Readiness built into everyday work
Reflecting on the recent inspection, Tom credits the culture around website management as well as the tools:
I cannot stress the importance of the ‘Always Ready’ culture that Schudio have for their clients and their websites - it really does help and makes content management so much easier when you aren’t overhauling your website in preparation for an inspection.
The outcome described by the school is tangible: inspectors had gained a flavour of Devonshire Road through its published content, staff could identify information needing attention, and a shared weekly routine helped reduce the burden when the call came.
The school’s own work is central to that outcome. Tom and his colleagues know their community, take responsibility for their content and keep reviewing how the website serves families. Schudio provides the platform, guidance and continuing support behind that work.
Together, those elements make the website more than a place to store information. They make it a regularly maintained part of school communication, useful to families throughout the year and able to tell the school’s story when others come looking.
