Apps we love – TED… Ideas worth spreading

Ted logo

We love TED. If you've not heard of TED before it's a collection of talks in video format given by some of the world's leading thinkers and doers. The acronym TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. There are TED talks available on almost every subject imaginable. TED talks first appeared online in 2006 and since then their presence has grown massively, after starting with only a handful of videos online there are now 1800+ talks(at the time of writing) available online, and all for free!

So there's all this video content out there, delivered by some of the best speakers, field leaders and creatives professionally filmed.. and it's free. There so many different ways to find videos to watch.

You can simply search the site using the search box and watch a video from one of the results that is shown.

Browse through existing playlists mainly curated by TED but with some from guest curators such as Bill Gates, Jamie Oliver, Barbara Streisand, Ben Affleck and David Blaine.

View videos for a specific topic, with a long list to choose from select a topic to view all the videos related to it.

There are two other categories of talks in addition to the main TED talks.

TEDx - a collection of talks from local speakers, to local audiences, and TED-Ed, videos aimed at educators and students.

Suprise Me

But what if you don't know where to start? TED have thought of that too and provide a really nice Surprise Me feature.

Surprise Me lets you select the kind of talk you want to watch from a selection of 8 genres, and how long you want to watch for - in 5 minute intervals, from 5 minutes to 1 hour. After making your selection a playlist is created just for you, with talks to match the criteria provided. And it's not a predefined list, making the same selection again will generate you a completely different playlist. Amazing!

TED is also available as an app for your mobile device, and contains the same great videos and features as its website, and guess what - it's also free!
