BBC Schools – An Introduction

The BBC do lots of great things (besides Top Gear and great breakfast shows on Radio 2). One of the things we think they do best is provide brilliant content for schools; students, teachers and parents alike. Here you will find some of our favourite offerings from the BBC that are just great resources to access.

The front of the main schools section on the BBC website gives you access to a wide range of offerings. The site is broken down into Primary and Secondary links primarily but there is lots of rich content within these sections and others.

Watch out for Bitesize, Schools Computing, School Radio and the BBC Learning Zone. There are also helpful Term Planner documents for primary and secondary and now over 7000 classroom clips available throughout the site.

Schools Computing

As part of the new curriculum we were delighted to see the BBC bringing together lots of resources from across the web but also putting together some super content of their own. They have included computing content for Primary and Secondary, Bitesize resources for everything from KS1 to Higher Computing Science and everything in between.

All levels included detailed introductions to all topics, pitched at the appropriate level and where possible easy to use programs and games to support learning.

Love this! A nice glossy PDF that you can download and print off as a reminder of key events in the term and where to get great resources to support your teaching. There are Primary Term Planners and a Secondary Term Planners available to download for nowt.

BBC Bitesize

This is probably the most whopping part of the BBC Schools online provision and as such can be a little bit much to find your way around. Try mixing up searching by keyword related to your curriculum topic with going in the front door and drilling down to the content you need.

Bitesize went through an overhaul in September 2014 because the BBC decided that it would be useful to bring together all the traditional resources they make available with the rich media content that is available elsewhere. Seems like a good idea. This means that now, alongside all the usual resources you can find up to 7000 clips on lots of different topics that you may be teaching on.

The resources cover lots of the curriculum and includes Secondary guides covering Key Stages 3 and 4 of the National Curriculum, and National 4, 5 and Highers in the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. Why did they do update Bitesize when it was pretty good anyway?

"Built on the latest technology, the new site is better designed, easier to use and easier to update. It will also work as well, if not better, on mobiles and tablets than it does on desktop and laptop computers, so you’ll be able to take Bitesize with you wherever you go and learn on the move."

Good enough for us.
