Typing.com - An Introduction

Typing.com is a web resource that helps to improve typing skills. It does this through a variety of different keyboard exercises and lessons. It's a free tool to use (Ad-supported), and even includes a teacher/student option. You don't even need an account to get started, you can take lots of the courses without entering any information, however creating an account means your progress will be saved so you can come back later and carry on. Having an account also opens up the option for more options including Typing Certificates sanctioned by the Typing Institute of America. Typing.com is a great resource and even just spending a small amount of time practicing should noticeably improve your typing skills.

Typing.com works on a computer, but will also work on an iPad or other tablet device. You can access it here

Typing.com - Courses

There are a variety of courses available on typing.com, there are currently only 12 courses that require the 'Gold' membership to use, all the rest are available on the free version. The courses are split into 3 different sections, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each section has a good number of lessons, and each lesson is split into multiple parts, it would take quite a bit of time to get through every lesson. There's even a full lesson dedicated to the number pad.

There's also other sections of courses, including speciality courses. This section contains lessons from literature, which are to be typed out. The lesson "Romeo & Juliet Act 1, Scene 1" makes special note that it is a very advanced lesson, particularly because of the way character names must typed in CAPITALS before their speech is typed.

Typing.com - In Education

In the American education system typing is one of the common core standards, similar to our national curriculum, and a lot of the content on the front of the typing.com website eludes to that. While typing is not currently a part of the national curriculum it's a great skill to have, and it's online courses are fun to do.
